Alex Smith scored two goals and Sam Smith earned Man of the Match honours as the Cowichan Farm Store Fury doubled up on Lakehill Hooligans 4-2 at Braefoot Park in a Div. 3 soccer match on Sunday afternoon.

Pat Foley and Nick Gurzinski also scored in the Fury’s first win of the young season, which saw their record improve to one win and one draw.

“The guys played really good in the wind-blown rain,” head coach Will Chaster said. “We took control of the game early and allowed little offence from the Hooligans. We moved the ball fairly quickly most of the time with good link-up play going back-to-front or sideways.”

Alex Smith opened the scoring at nine minutes, Foley scored his goal three minutes later, and Smith potted his second at 22 minutes. Sam Smith propelled the attack by serving up several long balls. Lakehill got on the board late in the first half. Gurzinski scored early in the second half, and Lakehill added their second in the 87th minute.

Mikael Seymour filled in between the posts and earned the Fury’s first win of 2020-21, although Tim den Hartigh, who missed Saturday’s game with an injury after playing in a 1-1 draw a week earlier, still boasts the better goals-against rating. The backline anchored by Miguel Trinczek and Connor Crichton and protected by Foley and Matt Archambault proved to be too much for Lakehill.

“It was very pleasing to watch and was a sign of what we may achieve,” Chaster said.

The Fury are now one of four teams tied for second in Div. 3 behind 2-0 Prospect Lake. They will take on another of those teams this Saturday when they host Juan de Fuca Kings at Sherman Road Turf at 4 p.m.
