Even though the Cowichan Piggies had little trouble with their opponent in a Second Division men’s rugby match at the Herd Road field on Saturday afternoon, it was still a valuable outing for the club.

“It was a pretty good run for us,” assistant coach Peter Budina said of the Piggies’ 60-0 victory over the visiting Comox Kickers. “We were able to try out different tactics and see what works well for our personnel and what style of rugby we can play heading into tougher games.”

The match also gave Cowichan a chance to get some players on the field who wouldn’t see a lot of action against a stronger opponent.

“Some guys were able to get much-needed game time, and we got some young kids some more experience,” Budina said. “Some of the old guys from Nooky Wood were able to suit up.”

Harry Seymour and Zack Simon were among the younger players to see significant action, while Louis Gudmundseth and Tim Van Vliet were two of the players from the over-40 “old boys” side to enter the game for the Piggies. With a full bench of their own, the Piggies also loaned Chase Gundersen to Comox to help even out the numbers a little.

The Piggies suffered “a few niggling injuries” against Comox, but should still have a full squad for their next match at Castaway Wanderers at Windsor Park this Saturday.

“It will be our first visit to a Victoria team this year and our first away game too,” Budina noted. “It should be our first real test of the season.”

Cowichan’s First Division women’s side was scheduled to play James Bay last weekend, but the game didn’t materialize as Bays is lacking numbers. The women will play host to Comox this Saturday at 1 p.m.
