The Cowichan Secondary Thunderbirds mounted a huge comeback for a 65-62 road win over G.P. Vanier last Tuesday in their first league game of the 2016-17 senior boys basketball season.

The T-Birds trailed by 14 points at halftime, then pulled ahead with a 33-13 run. Eston Unrau finished the game with 17 points, Brandon Reymerink had 15 points, and Theo Aeby put up 11.

“It was a good team win, but in many ways, Jaden Bhopal was our anchor in that second half comeback,” Cowichan head coach Lucky Walia said. “He was consistently in the right place at the right time on defence, and just kept our offence running smoothly.”

Back at home two days later, the T-Birds were edged 65-61 by Dover Bay. Aeby and Matthew Miller had 14 points apiece, and Unrau added 11.

“We did not have our best that game,” Walia said. “We just could not get going on offence, but the guys just stuck with things, and kept the game within reach.”

The T-Birds will host Lord Tweedsmuir this Friday night, tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
