Cowichan skaters succeed at Vancouver Island’s regional skating championships

Figure skaters from the Duncan and Kerry Park clubs competed at the the Vancouver Island Regional Skating Championships Feb. 3-5 in Nanaimo and put together some outstanding results.

“It went quite well,” said Duncan Skating Club coach Lorraine Francisty. “This was the final competition of the season on the island. It was nice having that many skaters represented.”

The Duncan Skating Club sent 18 skaters as well as the synchro team, the Duncan Duncanettes.

The Duncan Skating Club came home with several medals, including silver for Issabella Winn and Rylee Crook in Star 1 Group 3; Mia Chang and Peyton Pool in Star 1 Group 5; Claire Volk in Star 2 Group 3; Makayla Cook in Star 2 Group 6; Aliah Delano-Grasdal and Jayda Watson in Star 2 Group 7; and Annett Blumel in Star 3 Group 6.

The syncho team placed third in the Star 3 Synchro competition.

Bronze was awarded to Abigail Robertson in Star 1 Group 1; Zendaya Winn in Star 2 Group 4; Aolani Jimenz, Brooklyn Galavan and Farrah Phillips in Star 2 Group 6; Mackenzie Williams in Star 2 Group 7; and Layla Kocurek in Star 2 Group 8.

Other results included a sixth place finish for Madeline Perrett in Star 6 and a seventh place finish for Lyla deLeeuw in Star 4 Girls 13 & over.

The Kerry Park Skating Club sent seven skaters to the event including: Ava Schokking, Hanna Cowan, Kaylah St-Jean, Sophia Lafortune, Aurora Gugin, Edie Hamilton, and Phoebe Smith but their results weren’t available by press time.
