The three Cowichan Valley softball players who will be representing Zone 6 (Vancouver Island-Central Coast) at the BC Summer Games play on different teams in separate age group leagues, but their paths did cross once this year.

Bella Anderton-Teasdale and Kassidy Ralfs play for the Victoria Devils 06 club team, and Miller Fletcher plays for the Langford Lightning 07A club team. But Fletcher did get called up once to play for the Devils when they needed her skills in the infield.

This is the first time representing Vancouver Island for all three girls, who had to go through a series of tryouts to make the final cut, starting with a group of about “60-80” ballplayers.

“It’s exciting,” said Ralfs, who has spent the last six years with the Devils organization. “It’s a new experience.”

“I’m excited to play with new players,” Anderton-Teasdale added. “I’ve been playing with the same people with the Devils for the past three seasons.”

All three girls started playing ball at an early age and progressed through the ranks. Fletcher started at the age of four, then spent 10 years playing in Arizona, where her family lived before returning to the Cowichan Valley a year ago. In order to play ball at the A level, all three players have to travel outside their home community to find teams.

Ralfs and Fletcher concentrate on softball, focusing on that sport year-round, which wasn’t unusual at all for Fletcher when she lived in sunny Arizona. Anderton-Teasdale plays rugby as well, with the Cowichan Junior Piggies and MacDowell Rugby Academy at Cowichan Secondary School.

Anderton-Teasdale plays third base and outfield, Ralfs pitches and plays first base and outfield, and Fletcher plays catcher and third base.

For two of the three players, the BC Summer Games will be a family affair, as Ralfs’s brother Spencer is also on the Zone 6 boys 3x3 basketball team, and Fletcher’s mom, Cindy, is going with the girls softball team as an adult supervisor.
