U18 Capitals
The Cowichan Valley U18 Capitals were golden at the SeaTac Midwinter Classic Jan. 18-20 in Tacoma. The team got through the round robin with three wins, zero losses and one tie to advance to the final game.
Cowichan matched up against the Coquitlam Comets in the final and it took all three periods and more to find a winner.
Tied after regulation, the teams went into overtime and, with just seven seconds left, Carson Skyrup scored the game-winner from Joel Perret.
Cowichan's Joel Herkel was voted by his teammates as the Tacoma Rocket tournament MVP. Herkel led the tournament in scoring for the weekend with five goals and six assists.
Veenstra retiring
Duncan Christian School's legendary athletic director Tom Veenstra is retiring after 40 years associated with the school. A stalwart at nearly every athletic event the school has hosted for decades, Veenstra has decided to take a well-deserved retirement and travel with his wife.
Intake open for Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC grants
The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC (ORCBC) has launched the second intake of the Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC grant program, offering $2,000 to $10,000 in funding to support projects that enhance outdoor recreation, foster stewardship, and promote inclusivity.
This grant opportunity is designed to empower communities and volunteer organizations in their efforts to enhance outdoor recreation opportunities and stewardship across the province.
Last year the Cowichan Trail Stewardship Society received $10,000 to build a 70m boardwalk on Mount Tzouhalem's existing Cross Trail to improve wetland navigation thus mitigating damage to the ecosystem and increasing accessibility and safety for hikers.
