It all worked out in the end for the Third Division Cowichan Piggies last Saturday.

Initially unsure if they would be able to put together a team for the men’s rugby match, they ended up scraping together a solid group that included some over-40s players and some juniors, and romped to victory over a visiting Comox team.

“We weren’t sure how many players we would get, or what the team would look like,” Cowichan Thirds captain Jordan McGarvey said. “But we got enough guys for a full side, so it went well from that aspect.”

Louis Gudmundseth dominated the pitch and was named the Piggies’ Man of the Match.

“He was just all over the field,” McGarvey said. “He really controlled our game. He played really well.”

Youngster Ty Benson also had a great game for the Piggies at inside centre.

The Thirds were scheduled to play Westshore this weekend, but won’t have the numbers because the over-40 players will be saving themselves for their match in Victoria on Sunday, so the Thirds will have the weekend off after all. As a result, Cowichan’s First Divison men have had their kickoff on Saturday moved to 1 p.m.
