Cowichan United clinched first place in Div. 2 of the Vancouver Island Soccer League with back-to-back shutout wins last weekend.

At home on the Sherman Road turf last Friday, United beat Lakehill United 4-0, and on Sunday, the team hit the road to beat Powell River Villa 2-0. Darian Achurch earned the shutout in both games.

Scoring on Friday came from Player of the Game Russell Lederer, Ryan Andre, Stevan Zorich and Ryan Sampson. Zorich scored both goals on Sunday and was named Player of the Game.

United now has 14 wins and one loss for 42 points, while second-place Vantreights has 12 wins, one loss and two ties for 38 points. Cowichan will visit Vantreights this Sunday as both teams play their season finale, but the result will have no impact on the standings.

The Cowichan 49ers also have a shot at winning the Masters A division after beating CB Red Barn Bobcats 2-1 at Lochside Turf last Saturday. Darcy Penner and Stu Barker scored the Cowichan goals.

The Niners are currently second in the league with 34 points, two back of the first-place UVic Alumni. The teams will face off this Saturday at 4 p.m. on the Sherman Road turf, although third-place SFFC Old School could overtake them both. Old School has 31 points and two games remaining.
