Cowichan Valley water-skiers took gold in two U14 divisions at the 2022 BC Summer Games in Prince George last month, and helped Zone 6 (Vancouver Island-Central Coast) to team gold in towed water sports.

Duncan’s Madison Savory — at 10, one of the youngest competitors at the Summer Games — won gold in trick and took bronze in slalom, while Cobble Hill’s Abby Huck, 14, took top spot in jump even though she had only started jumping a week before the games. Both girls also contributed to the Zone 6 team’s overall gold medal.

“The summer games was such a fun experience,” said Savory, who has been water-skiing for two years. “Being around all the other athletes from all different sports with all the fun events going on.”

Savory earned a personal-best score in trick, and while her slalom run didn’t go the way she hoped, she was pleased to take home a medal.

“I was training really hard for slalom with my coaches Nicola and Johnny Horwood, but learned that not every day can be perfect as I didn’t have my best ever slalom run, but I was really happy to win a bronze for that,” she said.

Huck has been water-skiing with the Victoria Aqua Ski Club at Shawnigan Lake for four years, but only started jumping just before the Summer Games.

“My most memorable moment was when I finished the jumping event and all the kids were cheering at the dock and my coach Nicola picked me up and jumped in the water with me,” Huck said. “All the kids in towed water sports were so supportive of one another and I met some great friends at the Summer Games.”
