Cowichan wins a scrum against Castaways during last weekend’s victory.

Cowichan’s senior women’s rugby team started the spring portion of the Premiership season in winning fashion by beating South Island rivals Castaway Wanderers 46-22 at the Herd Road pitch last Saturday.

It was a huge victory for Cowichan, who had been on the losing side of the score in both their previous meetings with Castaways this season.

“This was the ladies’ first game back since November, a long break already that was extended due to the snow,” Cowichan forward Sherry Spence said. “It wasn’t fancy but the Cowichan ladies tackled hard and moved the ball well.”

Natasha Smith led the way with four tries, and her fellow national team players Laura and Kelly Russell each added one, with Kelly slotting three converts. Rebecca Saari and Stacey Collison also had single tries. Smith and Spence were selected as players of the match by Castaways.

Cowichan will visit Westshore in Langford  this Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
