Cowichan's Buchanan tops fourth flight at Zone 5 championship

Cowichan's Sandy Buchanan had the top finish among golfers from her home course last week as the Zone 5 Amateur, Senior and Handicap Championships were held on June 9 and 10 at the Royal Colwood and Cowichan golf courses.

Buchanan won the fourth flight in the Handicap Championship with a two-day net score of 135, 15 strokes better than Victoria's Berne Neufeld.

The Handicap Championship was won by Lou Watkins of Cordova Bay. Bree Sharratt of Bear Mountain won the Amateur Championship by a single stroke, 156-157, over Alison Murdoch of Victoria. Murdoch won the Senior Championship, however, beating Penny Baziuk of Ardmore/Cordova Bay by three strokes. Colleen Wheatley of Arbutus Ridge was third in the Senior Championship, one stroke back of Baziuk.

The Zone 5 women also hosted the Vancouver Island Junior Girls' Championship at Nanaimo Golf Club in May, bringing together golfers from Zones 5 and 6. Shirin Anjarwalla of Nanaimo won the event by four strokes. Emily Adams of Mt. Brenton won a closest-to-the-pin award on Hole 17.
