Duncan Christian School basketball coach Michelle King was honoured with the Brian Craig Memorial Award earlier this summer.
The award is presented each year by a coach within the Central Vancouver Island Athletic Association who “through coaching techniques and philosophy best epitomizes the qualities of sportsmanship and fair play.”
“Michelle has faithfully coached both junior girls and boys basketball players for the past 10 years at Duncan Christian, for the first couple of years with boys and then mostly with the girls program,” DCS athletic director Tom Veenstra said. “All of Michelle’s players consistently feel honoured and valued as they learn the game and develop their skills. She is a great encourager and motivator.
“Michelle’s focused, enthusiastic and friendly coaching style is highly respected by her athletes, colleagues, fellow coaches and officials.”
For several years, King worked in Nanaimo but drove to Duncan more than three times a week to coach basketball. Now a staff member at DCS, King also played a key role as game director when the school hosted the provincial girls basketball championships.
