Cowichan United played to their Div. 2-leading sixth draw of the 2019-20 Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association season on Sunday afternoon, tying Gorge FC 2-2 on the Sherman Road turf.

Cowichan got off to a solid start as Nicola Mawson, in her debut with the club, made runs down the wing and sent a cross into the box. It was Gorge, however, who got on the board first, scoring on a counter-attack 20 minutes in. Cowichan pressed for the equalizer and their work paid off in the 42nd minute.

“Rachel Price skipped by a Gorge defender, before playing a low cross in to Nicole Pugh,” Cowichan coach Adam Paulson described. “Pugh turned and fired, sending the game into halftime all square.”

Gorge had only one sub in the second half, and Cowichan capitalized, sending wave after wave of attack at the Gorge net, but once again, Gorge pulled ahead, making it 2-1 on a rare trip into the Cowichan end.

Cowichan wasn’t going to let the three points go that easily, though.

“The ball rarely left the Gorge half,” Paulson said. “And finally with four minutes remaining, it was Pugh to the rescue, as she beat the goalie from 10 yards out, the pace of the shot leaving no doubt as to the outcome.”

The season resumes on Jan. 12, when Cowichan visits Lakehill Reds.
