Two Cowichan Valley bowlers found themselves in an uncommon situation during their second provincial tenpin tournament in the past week. After hosting the Youth Bowl Canada provincials at Duncan Lanes, it was time for the Canadian Tenpin Federation’s turn and a team from Duncan Lanes attended the competition at the Zone Coquitlam on March 4.

“The intermediate boys competition saw Duncan bowlers Jeremy Garside and Parker Harvey having a rare tie for a medal as Parker converted a difficult split in the ninth frame and struck twice in the 10th to share the silver medal position and a total of 1,314 for eight games,” explained coach Bob Linde. The boys literally had to share the silver medal but a second medal has been promised.

Alex Gammie was another 36 pins back for fourth place in the same division while Aden Nettelton couldn’t follow up on his YBC dominance after setting a provincial record single of 278 the week before. Nettelton had a 1,204 total for an 11th place finish.

Penelope Hawkes was Duncan’s bantam girl representative and her 686 pinfall over eight games earned a her fourth place finish. Penelope’s big bother, Axel Hawkes, was the top bantam boy from Duncan, earning the team’s first medal — a bronze — with a pinfall of 937.

Also in the bantam division, after winning gold at YBC, Markus Lawrence finished strong and had an 846 for eighth place while Ronin Frehlick had a 686 for 10 overall.

In a tough junior boys division of experienced bowlers, Ethan Frehlick accumulated 1,066 pins for fifth place. Paige Novak knocked down 838 pins for a fourth place result in intermediate girls.

The final tournament for Duncan will be the YBC National Championships as Aden Nettelton, Ethan Frehlick and Markus Lawrence will represent British Columbia in Guelph, Ontario April 16-19.
