A close loss in the Duncan Christian School Chargers’ opening match at the junior boys volleyball Island championships last Saturday ended up playing a crucial role in the team’s destiny.

The Chargers took the Reynolds Roadrunners to a third game, ultimately falling 20-25, 25-23, 15-13. Reynolds went on to finish fifth overall, while the Chargers placed 12th. The last match of the day was another close one as they fell 25-21, 25-22 to host Ladysmith.

“It’s always a very tough tournament competing with the best on the Island,” DCS athletic director Tom Veenstra said. “Had we won our very first match — the close battle with Reynolds — we might have finished higher in the final placements. We are very proud of our team for qualifying for the tournament and very happy for all of the great experience they gained playing at this championship.”

The Chargers are coached by Duncan Christian grad Kevin Pridham and staff member Andrew Lacey. Pridham was the setter on the DCS team that won the single-A boys provincial championship in 2002.

The Chargers went into the Island championships as Central Island champions after defeating Gulf Islands Secondary in four matches on Wednesday, Nov. 3.

DCS is hosting the junior girls Central Island tournament this Thursday. Two teams from the DCS and two from Quamichan School will battle with one each from Brentwood College, Lake Cowichan, Queen Margaret’s, Chemainus Secondary and Gulf Islands, with games throughout the day, starting at 8:30 a.m. The semifinals are set for 4:30 p.m. and the finals are at 5:30 p.m.
