The Duncan Christian School Chargers narrowly missed an opportunity to attend the provincial single-A boys soccer championships.
With four teams from the Island competing for two berths at the provincial tournament at the Cowichan Sportsplex on Oct. 18, the host Chargers played to a close 2-1 defeat at the hands of Glenlyon Norfolk in their semifinal.
Zachary Henry scored the lone goal for DCS on a penalty kick, while goalkeeper Myles Paige kept the Chargers in the game with save after save. Unfortunately, all that action took a toll on his body, and injuries kept him out of the bronze-medal game.
The third-place match saw DCS face Brookes Westshore, who lost 3-0 in their semifinal against St. Andrew’s. Although play was fairly equal, Brookes came away with the bronze medals following a 5-2 victory. Scoring for the Chargers were Jayden Croswell on an assist by Parker Terpstra, and Tim Kempe.
GNS defeated St. Andrew’s 4-2 in the championship match. Both those teams will represent the Island at provincials in Burnaby next month.
