Duncan Christian pair wins silver in the sand

The Duncan Christian School team of Brenna Bazinet and Danielle Groenendijk came home with a silver medal from the Vancouver Island High School Beach Volleyball Open in Parksville on June 7. Entered in the Grade 10 girls division, Bazinet and Groenendijk

were the first female team from DCS to attend the tournament, and did the school proud by placing second in Tier 2. In pool play, the DCS girls split their three matches with Belmont, Cedar and Dover Bay to place third and move to the Tier 2 playoffs, where they defeated Ucluelet in three games. After winning the semifinal, they faced Dover Bay again in the final and lost to take silver.

Doug Groenendijk and Yiyi Yan finished ninth overall in the senior boys division. Finishing second in their pool, they battled Dover Bay for a spot in the round of eight, but lost a tough match. They recovered to beat Woodlands Secondary in a three-set battle to place ninth.
