Two Duncan curlers helped their rink to a berth in the 2018 Optimist BC U18 Curling Championships at a qualifier at Kerry Park Curling Club last weekend.

Brooke Reintjes, who plays third, and Delaena Reintjes, who plays lead, curl with Team Douglas, which also includes members from Port Alberni, Victoria and Parksville. Team Douglas was one of two Island rinks to earn spots at the provincial championships, which will take place in Salmon Arm on March 13-18.

Eight girls teams and eight boys teams will compete in Salmon Arm to represent B.C. at the national championships in New Brunswick.

The Douglas rink is skipped by Rebecca Douglas (Port Alberni), with Libby Elliot (Parksville) playing second and Gabriella Higdon (Victoria) as fifth.

“The girls played terrific this weekend which is indicative of the dedication, effort and training they have been putting in all year,” coach Dave Douglas said.

The team is sponsored by Coastal Community Private Wealth Group and Bow-Mel Chrysler.

Also qualifying at Kerry Park were Team Richards from the Comox Valley Curling Club, on the girls side, and Team Ballard, from the Coquitlam and Royal City curling clubs, on the boys side.

The 12-team field for the 2018 BC Men’s Curling Championship was also completed last weekend. Team Montgomery, which is based in Victoria but includes Cowichan Valley curlers Jason Montgomery, Miles Craig and Will Duggan, had previously qualified at the Island open playdowns in December, as had Team Craig, also based in Victoria but including Valley curlers Wes Craig, Gerald Poelman and Victor Gamble.

The B.C. championships will go in Parksville on Jan. 31-Feb. 4. The winner will represent B.C. at the 2018 Tim Hortons Brier in Regina from March 3-11.
