Duncan’s Davison hits pro links

Callum Davison has earned conditional status for the Mackenzie Tour

Duncan golfer Callum Davison earned conditional status for the Mackenzie Tour – PGA Tour Canada through qualifying school at Courtenay’s Crown Isle Golf Resort earlier this month.

Davison got off to a good start in the final round and sat at two-under after five holes before settling for a score of 75. After rounds of 70, 70 and 71 on the first three days, he had a good chance at getting into the Mackenzie Tour’s first four events, but after his final round of 75, he ended up tied for 26th overall, earning conditional status.

A year ago, the 18-year-old cross-handed golfer opted to turn down a full scholarship to play golf for the University of Nevada in Reno in favour of turning pro.

“With his unique swing and competitive nature, Callum knew the path he was going to take,” says his father, Robert. “At the end of June last year, having just turned 18, he decided to turn pro and hasn’t looked back since. In this last year, he has earned status on the PGA EuroPro Tour in the UK and played in eight of its tournaments.

“He also tried to qualify for the European tour in September and got through the first stage but came up short during the second stage, even after shooting a four-under on the final day. This finish, however, earned him conditional status for the European Challenge Tour for 2019 [the European equivalent to the Web.com Tour in the U.S.] and he’s hoping to play in a few events on that tour. Callum would have preferred to play in Canada this summer but it wasn’t meant to be. He will try again next year.”

Now, Davison is back in Europe where he has full status on the Alps Tour, a feeder to the Challenge Tour, after tying for sixth at Q-school in Spain in December. His best finish to date on the Alps Tour is a tie for seventh.

“Callum is fortunate and grateful for the local support from Norm Jackson of Cowichan Golf Club,” Robert commented. “And from both local clubs, Cowichan Golf and Country Club and Duncan Meadows Golf Course.”
