Duncan’s Davison cherishes Canadian Open experience

Nagging injury wouldn’t stop golfer from competing

Callum Davison wasn’t going let anything get in the way of his first Canadian Open.

Despite dealing with a herniated disc in his back for the last three months, the Duncan golfer was determined to play in the event in Toronto last weekend.

“I kind of did everything I could to be ready for the event,” the 22-year-old Davison said on Monday afternoon.

That included getting injections that allowed him to play. Although he said he wasn’t in that much pain during the Canadian Open, the injury is still interfering with his game.

“It’s not allowing me to play at the level I want to play at,” he said.

In the end, although he didn’t make the cut after the first two rounds, Davison had no regrets about participating.

“It was an awesome experience,” he said. “I made some great memories. My golf game wasn’t there, but I kind of knew that going in.”

Davison, who qualified for the Canadian Open as the 2021 Mackenzie Tour champion, shot 76 on Thursday and 77 on Friday for a total of 153, 12 shots back of the cut. Rory McIlroy, who repeated as tournament champion, shot 66 and 68 on the first two days, then 65 and 62 on the next two.

Caddying for Davison at St. George’s Golf and Country Club was Andy Johnson, the associate pro at Cowichan Golf Club who had a lengthy pro career of his own.

“He’s a super good dude,” Davison said of Johnson. “He has quite a bit of knowledge.”

Prior to last weekend, Davison’s only previous event this season was the Royal Beach Victoria Open on June 2-5, a warm-up for the Canadian Open. He said that, because of his injury, he had only played about two rounds of golf this year prior to that. He has withdrawn from the next two Mackenzie Tour events and is hoping to return for the tour stop at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley on July 21-24.
