Calling all young female athletes!

The Cowichan Women’s Football League is hoping to get an offshoot going for younger players, starting with a free camp for girls ages 6-16 at the Cowichan Sportsplex on Sunday, Oct. 24.

The camp will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and players are asked to come in outdoor clothing with runners or cleats, and bring water, a snack and a mask. Registration will be done at the field on the day of the camp. Sanitizer for hands and balls will be provided.

“We will have footballs and flags so the girls will get some basic instruction in the game and then in the afternoon we will have a couple of games depending on the turn out,” organizer Chris Mann said.

The ultimate goal is to have a girls league in the spring that will run alongside the long-running women’s league, with possible tournaments in Kelowna and at home in Cowichan.

A number of players from the Cowichan Women’s Football League will be on hand to coach and mentor the girls.
