Hometown rinks duel in Duncan Ladies Bonspiel final

A pair of Duncan rinks duked it out for first place in the A event at the Duncan Ladies Bonspiel earlier this month.

Out of the 14 teams - which included foursomes from Lake Cowichan, Nanaimo and Victoria in a mostly Duncan-based field - it all came down to the rink of Vicki Sjoberg, Sherry Squire, Shawn Bates and Tara Burnell beating Louise Martin, Lorraine Hamilton, Virginia Conway and Alita Grass for top spot.

The Martin team also came away with the "Biggest End" prize sponsored by Glen Harper, after scoring a six-ender.

Appropriately, the "Biggest End" competition was advertized with a picture of an elephant's backside.

"This year's theme was 'Things You Find at the Zoo,'" bonspiel organizer Heather Broughton noted. "Lots of interesting costumes Saturday night."

First place in the B event went to the Tricia Mayea rink from Lake Cowichan, followed by Nanaimo's Heather Lindsay-Lecuyer, Victoria's Lu Neilson, and Duncan's Pat Moore.

In the C event, Mary Gibbs of Kerry Park guided her team to first, followed by a trio of Duncan rinks: Grade Predy in second, Cathy Lambert in third, and Sheila Percival in fourth.

Bonspiel sponsors included A&W, Hardie Honey, Best Western Cowichan Valley Inn and Leon Signs.
