Hosts DCS, Cow High crack top 8 in senior girls volleyball tournament

QMS, Lake Cowichan and Frances Kelsey teams also played

Duncan Christian School came sixth overall and Cowichan Secondary was eighth in the 16-team senior girls volleyball tournament hosted by both schools over the weekend.

DCS won Pool A while Cow High placed second in Pool C.

“The tournament was a great opportunity for the team to really gel together,” said DCS head coach Jim Brandsma. “There were a lot of high moments where they played brilliantly and also tough times where they needed to work through. I think everyone gained some valuable experience.”

The Lake Cowichan School Lakers came third in Pool B, and landed in 11th overall thanks to a third-place showing in the consolation round.

Frances Kelsey and Queen Margaret’s schools placed 13th and 15th respectively, both having finished fourth in their pools.

Nanaimo Christian School, who beat the Lakers in the first round of pool play, went on to win the tournament beating Kwalikum in the final in straight sets.

One all-star was selected from each of their 16 teams in the tournament.

Local all-stars included: Danika Fitzpatrick(DCS), Mia Oschmann (Cowichan), Raya Halusiak (Lake Cowichan), Arlee Ciashini (Kelsey), Maggie Mycroft (QMS).
