No fewer than eight Cowichan Valley products were in action last weekend as the UVic Vikes hosted the UBC Thunderbirds for a pair of Canada West field hockey matches.

The host Vikes featured six players from the Valley: rookies Ashton Aumen, Emma Dame, Hannah Craig and Robin Fleming, second-year player Sophia Murray, and fourth-year player Stefanie Langkammer, while UBC fielded two: rookie Sara Goodman and fifth-year player Sarah Keglowitsch, one of two team captains.

The teams battled to a 1-1 draw last Saturday, and the T-Birds prevailed 3-0 in the rematch on Sunday. Keglowitsch had one of UBC’s goals on Sunday, and Goodman helped set up another.

UVic head coach Lynne Beecroft, also a Valley product and an inaugural member of the North Cowichan/Duncan Sports Wall of Fame, was impressed with the play of her many rookies, and specifically mentioned Craig’s defensive play in an article on the UVic website.

“We have eight rookies and six of them in the lineup today [Saturday], so we are going to rely on them,” Beecroft told govikesgo.com.

The teams will meet again at UBC on Oct. 7 and 8.

Closer to home, the Cowichan Secondary School Thunderbirds will host the John Ferreira Memorial Tournament at the Cowichan Sportsplex this Friday, where they will be joined by Frances Kelsey and South Delta. Games go at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
