Isles drop two to continue winless November

Kerry Park’s struggles continue

Two more defeats last weekend left the Kerry Park Islanders still looking for their first win of November.

The Isles lost 5-2 on Friday to a Saanich Braves team they had beaten in their three previous meetings of the 2019-20 Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season, then fell 7-3 on Saturday to the North Division-leading Oceanside Generals.

The Braves were up 4-0 with 90 seconds left in the second period on Friday when Hikaru Kinowaki scored his second of the season on the powerplay. Saanich scored another one before Kinowaki notched his second of the game shorthanded. Kerry Park goalie Spencer Deakin made 29 saves as the Isles outshot the Braves 40-34.

On Saturday, Parker Bergstrom opened the scoring for Kerry Park just 19 seconds in, but the Generals scored three goals in a minute and a half starting at the 8:22 mark of the first to pull in front. Oceanside added another early in the second, but Cory Mater and Alex Villa got the Isles back within one. The Generals pulled away after that with one more in the second and two in the third. Bergstrom and Mater finished with a goal and an assist each. Nick Haisell got the start in net and allowed five goals on 20 shots through 35 and a half minutes. Deakin replaced him and stopped 16 of 18 shots over the balance. In all, the Isles were outshot 38-23.

The Isles visited the Nanaimo Buccaneers on Thursday and have two home games this weekend, hosting the Victoria Cougars Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and the Oceanside Generals Sunday at 3 p.m.
