The spring football season kicked off for the Cowichan Bulldogs with a jamboree in Victoria last weekend.

The junior bantam Bulldogs got the opportunity to test themselves with 20-minute games against four of the other five teams in the league, battling hard and showing the coaching staff what they can expect this season.

The Cowichan defence had an outstanding day, stopping drives all over the field. Outstanding players included captain Kaden Backman, who was the team’s leading tackler on the day and recorded an interception. Maxim Magnan was another key contributor, coming out of nowhere to destroy opposing teams’ plays.

On offence, the Bulldogs’ backfield ran hot and cold, but generated both touchdowns the team scored at the jamboree. Second-year running back Josh Thompson scored the first on a long scamper set up by a beautiful block by fullback Gabe White. The other touchdown came from Orion Lamb, also a second-year running back, scored in a different game as he was being tackled, stretching out to break the plane at the end of a strong drive.

“From my point of view as a coach, the day was an exciting one,” coach Justin Young said. “We had a few kinks that we worked through, but getting to see the boys come together and put all the hard work they have been putting in for weeks now on display in a game was outstanding. This is the beginning of an amazing year as we have such talent on this team both returning and new, and I am excited to see where we fit in this very competitive league we have found ourselves in. This weekend was our opportunity to finalize where we have kids and make sure we have everyone in the right spot and it showed us just what we needed to see as well as some surprise diamonds in the rough.”

Three Cowichan teams will be in action at McAdam Park this Saturday. The atoms play at 10 a.m., peewees at 11:30 a.m. and junior bantams at 1:30 p.m.
