The Kerry Park Islanders dropped their Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season opener on Wednesday night, falling 5-2 to the Westshore Wolves.

The Isles trailed 2-0 after first period and 4-0 midway through the second before they finally got on the board with a powerplay goal by Jarret Malloch at 11:14. Nova Scotia transplant Griffin Abbott scored his first as an Islander with just over three minutes left in the middle stanza to cut Westshore’s lead to two.

Former Islander Parker Ellis put the game on ice with an empty-netter at the end of the third, finishing with a game-high three points and first-star honours.

Malloch ended up with a goal and an assist on the night, and Keenan Eddy, back home in the Cowichan Valley after a year playing junior A in Ontario, set up both Kerry Park goals. Chase Anderson got the start in goal for the Isles, and stopped 23 of the 27 shots he faced. Jordan Spandli made 34 saves at the other end of the rink.

The Isles will look for their first win of the campaign this Saturday when they play host to the Peninsula Panthers at 7:30 p.m.
