Lake Cowichan Kraken take the ice in exhibition tournament

Expansion hockey team plays first games at home arena

The Lake Cowichan Kraken took to the ice for the first time on the weekend of Aug. 6-8 as they hosted the Showcase at the Lake tournament at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.

It was the first opportunity for fans to see the expansion Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League team in action. They were joined for the event by fellow junior B teams the Kerry Park Islanders, Campbell River Storm and Surrey Knights, among others.

Former Capitals star Luciano Wilson was back on the ice in the Cowichan Valley last weekend, but in unfamiliar threads as he skated for one of the Kraken squads, playing alongside his twin brothers, forward Brendon and goaltender Anthony, for the first time.

Wilson spent two productive seasons with the Caps, leading the team in scoring in 2019-20, before he was traded to the Penticton Vees. He again led the Vees in scoring with 29 points in 20 games in the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season and plans to return for his 20-year-old season this fall.
