Lake Cowichan Kraken’s Wilson earns shutout in victory over Buccaneers

Kraken split first pair of 2023

The Lake Cowichan Kraken went into the holiday season on a high, having defeated the Saanich Braves 5-4 on their last day of play before the break. The hope was that they’d continue winning, and they did — just not in their first game back.

On Jan. 6 the Kraken played host to the Victoria Cougars, falling by a 4-3 score.

Victoria came out of the gate flying, with goals late in the first and early in the second period. Mitchell Billings pulled Lake Cowichan within one at 12:26 of the second with assists going to Sukhraj Narwal and Jacob Campbell.

Victoria pulled away again in the third period but Aiden Eddy countered for the Kraken with Anthony Wilson assisting on the goal.

Lake Cowichan would only get within one though, as the two teams traded goals — the Kraken’s scored by Campbell from Wilson and Narwal — to finish with a 4-3 Victoria win.

Sean Walia battled in goal, stopping 24 of 28 shots faced.

On Sunday, Brendon Wilson got the call in net for the home team as the Nanaimo Buccaneers visited the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena for an evening contest. Wilson stopped all 25 shots he faced in a 1-0 shutout victory.

Richard Bergman scored the game’s only goal at 5:50 of the second period. Assists were awarded to Eddy and Billings.

Up next for the third game in the Kraken’s six-game homestand — a Friday the 13th battle against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
