After they dropped the first half of a doubleheader against the South Island Baseball League’s last-place team last Sunday, the bats came alive for the Mid-Island Brewers in the second half.

The Brewers lost 2-1 to the Carnarvon Astros in the opening game at Oak Bay’s Henderson Park, but bounced back with a 9-2 victory in the next game.

It was the first time Keygan Hankins had missed a game since taking over as Brewers manager in 2018 as he travelled to Seattle to watch the Boston Red Sox take on the Mariners, but he stayed in close touch with the club, fielding half a dozen calls on Sunday morning alone.

“From what I heard of game one, we just struggled to hit,” Hankins reported. “We were missing a lot of guys who are major pieces to our lineup, but we are a good enough team to compete even when missing pieces.”

The second game was tied 2-2 going into the sixth inning, but the Brewers took over after the Astros made a pitching change when multiple walks led to seven unanswered runs.

Hayden Plester, a lefthanded starting pitcher out of the Cowichan Valley Mustangs program, started game two on Sunday, giving up just two runs over six innings to get the Brewers back in the win column.

With a 5-3 record, the Brewers sit second in the SIBL standings and will play host to the Layritz Red Sox at Evans Park on Saturday at noon at 3 p.m.
