The Mid-Island Brewers took their first two losses of the South Island Baseball League season last Saturday as they dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Evans Park against the Layritz Reds, the team the Brewers defeated for the league championship in 2021.

The Reds thumped the Brewers 15-3 in the opener. The second game was closer, with the Layritz club prevailing 15-3.

“If you had to ask me where things went wrong I think we just played two games of sloppy baseball,” Brewers manager Keygan Hankins said. “After going over the scorebook after the game, I realized that we only gave up three earned runs, which means we gave up a grand total of 15 runs due to errors made by our fielders.

After some reflection, Hankins felt the results — painful as they may have felt at the time — were probably somewhat beneficial.

“I was upset in the heat of the moment, but I think ultimately I’m thankful for the rough two games,” he said. “I believe it will serve as a stark reminder to my team that no team is unbeatable if they do not play the game the way they know how.”

On the positive side, Caleb Battye hit his first career home run for the Brewers, a two-run shot to centre field.

The Brewers are hoping to bounce back this Sunday when they visit the last-place Carnarvon Astros at Henderson Park in Oak Bay, with games at noon and 3 p.m.
