Mixed results for Cowichan Valley teams as basketball provincials begin

Brentwood advances, both DCS teams lose first-round games.

Brentwood College School won its opening game at the provincial AA boys basketball championships in Langley onWednesday, while Duncan Christian School’s boys and girls teams lost their first games at the single-A tournaments.

The top seed at the AA boys tournament, Brentwood easily got past 16-seed Prince Charles Secondary Creston, winning 97-39. Brentwood advanced to the second round, where they were to face Richmond’s H.J. Cambie late Thursday afternoon.

Also in Langley, Duncan Christian School lost 86-59 to Surrey’s Khalsa School in their opening game of the single-A boys tournament. The Chargers went on to lose 52-45 to St. Andrew’s — the team DCS beat 61-46 in the Island championship game — on Thursday afternoon. The Chargers play Burnaby's Deer Lake School on Friday morning.

In the only provincial senior tournament not held in Langley, the host Duncan Christian Chargers were beaten 87-44 by top-seeded Mulgrave from West Vancouver in the first round, then edged 50-47 by St. Ann’s from Kamloops in the second round on Thursday morning.

The DCS girls play next at 1 p.m. on Friday. Games are played at Duncan Christian and Chemainus Secondary schools, and can be streamed online at bcgirlsabball.ca
