Multiple records smashed at Cobble Hill 10K road race

Two course records were set and first place came down to an exciting finish at the Cobble Hill 10K road race on Jan. 22.

John Woodall of Victoria broke the previous men’s 85-89 record by 10 minutes, finishing in one hour, two minutes and 34 seconds. Maree Kennell, also of Victoria took 13 minutes off the women’s 75-79 course record, finishing in 1:01:43.

First place in the race came down to Jevin Monds of Edmonton and Andrew McCartney of Victoria, with Monds’s winning time of 33:31 edging McCartney by six seconds. Third place went to Craig Odermatt, the top masters runner with a time of 34:08.

Erin Burnett of Nanaimo was the top women’s finisher with a time of 34:59. Second was Jen Millar of Victoria at 36:50, while Chloe Hegland of Victoria was third at 37:10.

The top finisher from the Cowichan Valley was Dusty Spiller of Duncan, who was sixth overall with a time of 34:43. Cory Ramstead of Duncan finished in 37:56, and Derek  , also of Duncan, had a time of 38:41. Jill Ramstead was the top local female runner with a time of 39:23, while Kristin Smart of Cobble Hill finished in 40:51.

“We had a great field of elite runners today,” race director Ian Milne said. “It was nice to see Erin win and Jevin had a very strong finish. I would like to thank all of the club volunteers who were so enthusiastic and put in the hours to help make the event a success.”
