Cowichan LMG’s Paddy Nelson opened the scoring and was named the Vancouver Island Soccer League’s player of the game, but the VISL Div. 1 all-stars ended up on the losing side of a 3-2 score in their showdown with the best players from the Fraser Valley Soccer League at Hampton Park last Saturday.

The VISL team, which was coached by Cowichan’s Glen Martin and also included LMG players Craig Gorman, Kevan Brown, Jordan Korven and Darian Achurch, led 2-0 at halftime, but the FVSL all-stars tied the game in the second half, then won on penalty kicks.

The VISL also lost to the FVSL in the Masters all-star game, falling 2-1. Kevin James of the Cowichan 49ers coached the Island team in that match, with players Stu Barker, Ryan Fusick, Rob McIntyre, Darcy Kulai, Richard Lord, George Thomas, Adam Taft and Todd Vass suiting up.

In other games last Saturday, the VISL Div. 3 all-stars beat Div. 2 3-0, and the U21 all-stars beat Div. 4 3-0.

Regular-season games in the VISL and Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association will resume this weekend. This Sunday, the Over 30A Cowichan Cougars will host Juan de Fuca at Evans Park at 10 a.m., and the Div. 2 Cowichan Outlaws will host Nanaimo United at the Williams Turf at noon. At 6:30 p.m., U21 Cowichan United will visit the Mid Isle Mariners at the Ladysmith turf.
