Just before the Christmas break, the Duncan Stingrays sent swimmers to a pair of meets on the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

Nine Duncan swimmers attended the FastSwim Classic hosted by the Richmond Rapids Swim Club on Dec. 17-19. More than 600 swimmers attended the meet at the Watermania complex, so the host club ran three short sessions a day to minimize the number of people in the building, and limited the participants to a maximum of six events over the three days.

“It was a removal from our typical two sessions per day competition with heats and finals,” Stingrays head coach Leanne Sirup said.

Evan Hales and Kailie MacGregor both achieved personal bests in all of their races, while Teddy James and Kate Schultz had PBs in all but one of their events. Lauchlan MacGregor had four PBs and reached one final. Anna Fairweather and Brody McCartney each had three PBs, with Fairweather reaching one final and McCartney shaving 11.78 seconds off his previous personal record in the 400m IM. Ryca Stiwich set two personal bests in her first competition in 21 months.

The Stingrays also sent two swimmers to the Ugly Sweater Invitational hosted by the Nanaimo Riptides on Dec. 18 and 19. In addition to recognizing the fastest swimming, prizes were handed out for the top three ugly sweaters, and Duncan’s Waylin MacGregor was among the winners.

MacGregor also had three PBs over his five events, finishing top three in three of his races and achieving Vancouver Island Region qualifying times in all five. Angus Preston also raced five events, with two PBs and five top-three finishes, and VIR QTs in three races. Matthew Ruiter raced three events, with two PBs and two top-three results, with one new VIR QT.
