Playoffs get underway in Cowichan Women’s Football League

Law and Ravens win quarter-final matchups

Regular-season play wrapped up in the Cowichan Women’s Football League last Friday, and the playoffs began with a pair of games on Sunday morning.

In one of Friday night’s games, the Storm defeated the Ruckers 36-12. Kat Waldron and Vicky Harris each had two touchdowns, with one each from Annie Zurrer and Veronica Smith. Zurrer and Ronnie Brown also had interceptions for the Storm. The Ruckers got both their touchdowns from Hannah McKevitt, with a sack by Sabrina Desrochers.

The other game saw the Law defeat the Wild 41-7. The Wild got their touchdown from Jeannine Gaudreau with the extra point from Kerry Hydes, while Ellie Irvine recorded a sack.

The Ravens knocked the Wild out of the playoffs with a 60-0 win in the quarter-finals on Sunday morning. Jamie Russell had two touchdowns for the Ravens, one on a pick-six and the other on a kick return, and added three interceptions on defence. Kat Olsen, Leah McCormick, Jamie Aitchison, Megan Lee and Chelsea Strandlund also scored, and Brin Wylie recorded a sack. The Wild got sacks from Irvine and Gaudreau, and an interception from Ashley Bond.

The other quarter-final saw the Law quiet the Storm 39-13. Bryn Piper had four touchdowns for the Law, and Leanne Closson and Toni Williams added one each, with two converts by Jaimie Olson and one by Kim Scafe. Olson and Britnie Hearsey also had interceptions, and Danielle Rankin added a sack. Harris and Chelsea Morton scored touchdowns for the Storm, Rachel Paddle had a convert, and Waldron had an interception.

The semifinals took place on Wednesday night, with the Crew facing the Law and Ravens taking on the Ruckers. The final is set for this Saturday.
