Ryan Brabander recorded the shutout and two teammates had hat tricks as the Cowichan Rats improved to 4-0 on the Vancouver Island Lacrosse League season with a 16-0 drubbing of the Westshore Aces at the Cowichan Arena on Saturday night.

The Rats jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first period, and the Aces got into penalty trouble in the second, giving themselves no chance to come back. At one point in the second, the Aces — who arrived at the game with a limited roster to begin with — had four runners in the penalty box, three on the floor and just one on the bench.

When the dust settled, the Aces had accumulated 48 minutes in penalties — including three 10-minute misconducts — while the Rats had just six minutes worth of infractions.

Tyson Black and Gordon Robb each had three goals and two assists to pace the Cowichan attack. Josh Hayton scored twice and added three helpers, and Clayton Vickers also potted a pair and added one assist. Also gracing the scoresheet were Pete Vanden Dungen (1G and 4A), Dylan Dewarle (1G and 3A), Michael Shepherd (1G and 3A), Shayne Alexander (1G and 1A), Brayden Zunti (1G and 1A) and Wes Morris (1A).

The Rats have two weeks off until their next match, another home date against the Saanich Express at 7:30 p.m. on May 28. The Rats got past the Express 8-6 in the previous meeting between the two clubs.
