With the win already sealed up before they stepped on the floor, the S&B General Contractors Cowichan Rats earned a moral victory over the Wsanec Arrows at the Cowichan Arena on Saturday.

The Arrows showed up without enough players to play an official Victoria Senior Lacrosse League match, but were still game for a scrimmage. The shorthanded team put up a good fight, but the Rats managed to prevail 7-6 to even the season series with Wsanec at one game apiece.

AP Jacob Taylor, summoned from the junior B2 Oceanside Sharks, stepped up with three goals in his first senior game, and Dylan Dewarle notched a game-high four assists. Pete Vanden Dungen scored twice and added one assist and Conor Manahan and Ryan King had one goal apiece. Dan Rabey had three assists in his season debut, and Luke Van Huizen and Spencer Rooke each had two helpers.

Emilio Garcia was a force for the Arrows, scoring five goals and setting up the other. Cowichan’s Kevin Smith and Wsanec’s Jericho Paul kept it close in net.

With four wins and one loss, the Rats now sit second in the VSLL, and are headed for a big showdown with the first-place Victoria Blazers in Esquimalt this Thursday. The May 18 home game against the Victoria Tugmen will be rescheduled.
