It’s the end of the regular season for Cowichan FC, presented by The Society Barbershop and Cafe. The div. 1 soccer squad ended their regular season on a high note, registering a 4-2 win over Saanich Fusion FC in Victoria on Sunday.

Cowichan scored early when Cade Smith played a sublime pass through the Saanich defence, sending Jada Hill in alone. Hill made no mistake, putting Cowichan ahead 1-0.

“Cade has really settled into her new offensive midfield role, and is creating chances in bunches for our strikers, as her deft passes are turning defences inside out,” head coach Adam Paulson noted.

Cowichan doubled their lead 18 minutes later when Smith crossed the ball and Aisha Werner picked up the pass and hammered a shot past the Saanich keeper for her first goal of the year.

“Aisha has been a little snakebit this year,” Paulson said. “So it was gratifying to see her get her reward with her first goal for the senior team.”

Saanich responded 10 minutes later, as a long shot eluded Kate Collins.

Cowichan re-established their two-goal lead soon thereafter when Werner broke into the Saanich box, before sending the ball back to midfielder Kayla Kazda, who fired the ball into the top corner.

A Saanich penalty kick in the 52nd minute made the score 3-2.

The game was settled in the 81st minute, Paulson said.

Fancy footwork from Smith led to a pass to Keisha Sampson who got to the ball at the same time as a Saanich defender and the keeper.

The two Saanich players collided, and the ball caromed back to Sampson, who slotted it in the empty net.

The game ended 4-2 for Cowichan.

With the regular season now down, the team next plays in the Doug Day Cup, Feb. 25 on the road against Castaways FC.

“What a truly amazing year we had,” Paulson said. “As a team promoted into a higher league, you expect to struggle, and hope that you can do enough to remain in the league. Instead, the ladies went out and have again challenged for promotion to Premier. Whether or not we play in Premier, or Division 1 next year, the team can be incredibly proud of their accomplishments this year.”
