Things didn’t go as planned for Cowichan Oak FC on their trip to visit Salt Spring FC last Sunday afternoon.
Winners of five of their previous six Vancouver Island Soccer League matches, The Oak were hoping to continue their recent success, but Salt Spring showed why they are sitting second in their Div. 3 pool by scoring in the first minute and holding on for a 3-0 win.
Salt Spring sat on their one-goal lead and made The Oak come at them, then scored again right at the end of the first half, dealing a blow to Cowichan’s morale. They scored a third goal in the 66th minute that put the game to bed.
“The guys that showed up worked very hard for each other but ultimately the bounces at Portlock just don’t tend to go the visiting team’s way,” Cowichan coach Jonas Golf-Myers said.
There was some consolation in the post-game meal, however.
“[Man of the Match] has to be the staff at Moby’s Pub and whoever put duck wings on the menu,” Golf-Myers kidded.
The Oak will play their final home game of 2021 this Saturday at 4 p.m., at home against undefeated Gorge FC on the Sherman Road turf.
In Div. 4, the Cowichan Fury also played to a 3-0 loss, at home against Vantreights FC on Saturday afternoon. The Fury will visit Juan de Fuca United at Goudy Turf in Victoria this Sunday.
In Div. 1, Cowichan LMG had the weekend off to lick their wounds after a three-game losing streak. They will look to get back to winning form this Friday when they play host to JDF All Flows on the Sherman Road Turf at 7:30 p.m.
