Shawnigan Hills parkrun report for Feb. 26

This Saturday’s run will celebrate International Women’s Day

Parkrun number 37 was notable for the 200th personal-best time at Shawnigan Hills, as Ed Love led home the field of 19 athletes in a time of 20:33. Jasmin Bal and junior runner Charlotte Visscher completed the trio of in-form runners. There was also a major workout for Charlotte’s dad Travis, who had to battle the hills with two of her siblings in a pushchair!

There is also a battle between three of our regular runners to see who will enter the 25 parkrun club first, with David Pope, Jeff Wright and Claire Curtis sitting at 22, 23 and 24 respectively. Commemorative T-shirts are available for those who reach such a landmark.

Two years ago, we commemorated International Women’s Day, in what was our final run before the pandemic. All over the world, parkrunners will be wearing purple this Saturday as parkrun celebrates this important event. Here is official word from parkrun Canada: “We know that many women and girls face very real barriers to taking part in physical activity. From the fear of walking or running in public, of coming alone, to feeling nervous about what to do on arrival, or worrying about coming last. This International Women’s Day we are joining forces with our friends at This Girl Can to encourage thousands more women and girls to take part in a parkrun event on Saturday, March 5, 2022.”

Walk, jog, run, volunteer or simply come and watch — it is up to you. Be a part of the community, make new friends and socialize — we meet at Shawnigan Coffee House post-run after each event. It is a great way to start the weekend.
