Shawnigan Hills parkrun report for March 26

Extra hill-climb doesn’t prevent personal-best times

For not the first time since we started, participants in this week’s parkrun event undertook another change in the route. It is likely, however, that this new course will be permanent, despite an air of disgruntlement due to an extra hill-climb — we are not called Shawnigan Hills parkrun for nothing! On the plus side, the finish line appeared sooner than usual and finishers were able to seek shelter from the rain almost immediately.

Ironically, 14 out of the 23 athletes recorded personal best times. The in-form athletes included first-place runner Ed Love, who entered the sub-20 club in a time of 19:51; David Pope, who edged ever closer to the sub-30 mark in a time of 30:05; JW11-14 runner Emma Hill, who did record her first sub-30 in a time of 29:36; Amy Holloway, who improved on her JW10 record by 49 seconds; Corinne Symes, who improved by over two and a half minutes and, finally, Rachel Lawless, a self-confessed “fair-weather walker” (who must secretly like the rain) improved by 37 seconds.

While we encourage parkrunners with dogs and pushchairs, new rules will come into place this week. Parkrun Canada states the following: “Dogs should be kept under firm control, on a short lead (not a waist harness), and care must be taken to avoid tripping others. Participants are not permitted to walk, jog, or run with a pushchair and a dog at the same time.”

Walk, jog, run, volunteer or simply come and watch — it is up to you. Be a part of the community, make new friends and socialize — we meet at Shawnigan Coffee House post-run after each event. It is a great way to start the weekend.
