Shawnigan Lake School’s teams won both their games and Cowichan Secondary went down to defeat in senior boys Stadium Series rugby matches at Shawnigan last Friday.

Shawnigan’s second XV defeated Earl Marriott’s second XV, and the provincially top-ranked first XV beat fourth-ranked Handsworth.

Cowichan, meanwhile, suffered a tough 29-12 loss to South Delta. Despite playing a man down due to a yellow card, Cowichan trailed just 10-5 at halftime thanks to a try by John-Henry Morten. In the second half, the Thunderbirds let South Delta off the hook.

The T-Birds started the second half strong as Haele Ferguson crossed the line and Logan Kits slotted the conversion. Cowichan looked set to score again after a strong drive, but an over-thrown lineout instead sent South Delta on a 90-metre run for the go-ahead try.

“This proved to be the turning point as we allowed two more tries due to weak open-field tackling,” Cowichan coach Ron Glass lamented.

Cowichan was set to play G.P. Vanier in the North Island final on Thursday afternoon, while Shawnigan prepares to face Oak Bay at Brentwood College School on May 18.
