Try Rugby this Sunday at the Cowichan pitch

The Cowichan Rugby Football Club, the B.C. Rugby Union and Rugby Canada are holding a free event at the Herd Road rugby pitch this Sunday to let youngsters give the sport a try.

If the snow melts and field conditions allow, the non-contact Try Rugby event for boys and girls ages 6-12 will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Check the Cowichan Junior Piggies Facebook page for status updates, or email Kenton McNutt at kentonmcnutt@royallepage.ca for more information.

Premier women back in action Saturday

For the first time since last fall, the Cowichan Rugby Football Club’s senior women’s team is scheduled to take to the field this weekend.

The women’s team is set return to action on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. for their Premier game against Victoria’s Castaway Wanderers.

The First Division men, meanwhile, will go to Port Alberni on Saturday. The Piggies return to action for the first time since a blowout win over Nanaimo’s second team in late January.

Midget Capitals still in the running

The DaxTech IT Solutions midget A Cowichan Valley Capitals lost 5-2 to Peninsula in the final game of the round-robin South Island tournament last weekend, but are still in the running for the Island title and a berth in the provincial championships.

The Capitals placed second in the South Island group, and will face Oceanside, the North Island first-place team in a one-game playoff this weekend. The winner of that game will play a best-of-three series for the Island banner and a spot at the provincial tournament in Port Coquitlam.

Field lacrosse provincial tournament called off

Due to snow on the turf fields at UVic, the provincial field lacrosse championships were cancelled last weekend, leaving two Mid Island teams out in the cold.

As Island finalists, both the U15 and U18 Mid Island Lightning qualified for their provincial tournaments, which were supposed to take place on Feb. 10-12. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate and the tournaments were called off.
