Todd Vass’s goal in the 61st minute stood up as the winner as the Cowichan 49ers doubled up on Gorge FC 2-1 in an O35 men’s soccer match at the Sherman Road turf last Saturday evening.

After a scoreless first half, Stu (Shake ‘n’ Bake) Barker opened the scoring with his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 52nd minute. Vass scored his second of the year nine minutes later, and it proved vital as Gorge got on the scoreboard in the 82nd minute.

Dave Tuckey made his season debut for the 49ers, and the midfield was solid, anchored by the return of Richard Lord, as well as Matthew James, who earned The Chain for “working like a beast.” Goalie Darian Achurch was awarded the hard hat “for having the ugliest and brightest uniform ever,” which player-manager Neall Rowlings described as “even worse than his Superman jersey.”

The 49ers remain on top of the O35A standings with 29 points to UVic Alumni’s 28, although UVic has a game in hand. The 49ers visit JDF Pacific this Saturday.

Later last Saturday, the Cowichan Steelheads played to a 2-2 draw with the same Vic West club that had defeated them 2-0 a week earlier. Vic West opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, but Kevin Smith and Travis Brown answered back in the 60th and 65th minutes. Vic West added one more in the 77th for the draw.

The Steelheads have this weekend off, then play host to UVic Alumni on Feb. 5.
