The Cowichan Outlaws were the dominant team in their Stephanie Shergold Cup round-robin opener last Sunday, but it didn’tshow in the result.
The Div. 2 Lower Island Women’s Soccer League team outplayed Prospect Lake in the match at the Sherman Road turf, but endedup on the wrong side of a 2-0 final score.
Tiara Enger appeared to score when she beat the goalie with a corner kick, but the referee missed the goal from his vantagepoint and Prospect Lake wasn’t about to correct him.
“The girls played perfectly,” coach Neall Rowlings said. “They carried the play 70 per cent of the time, but just couldn’t capitalizeon their luck with the exception of the missed goal. Hillary Fisher had the best game of her life and so did Heather Morson.
“The girls know the results aren’t fair and are buying into the new style of play well.”
The Outlaws continue the Shergold Cup tournament with a road game against Bays United this Sunday.
The Over 30A Cowichan Cougars lost 4-1 to Gorge’s Div. 2 team in their first-round game on Sunday morning. They faceProspect Lake, also on the road, this weekend.
On the men’s side of the game, the Masters A Cowichan 49ers play Saturday at 4 p.m. at Sherman Road in the second round ofthe Tony Grover Cup tournament.
In their most recent league game, the Niners tied UVic Alumni 0-0 at Sherman Road last Friday night.
Rob McIntyre picked up the shutout, and Richard Lord was named Player of the Game. The Niners’ next league game is set forthis Sunday when they visit SFFC Internationals in Saanich.
The Niners sit second in the Masters A division, just one point back of UVic Alumni, although the UVic Alumni have five gamesleft to Cowichan’s three.
