Hosting the U12B provincial softball championships at Evans Park last month was a real learning experience for the Duncan Rockets.
Although the home team went winless in five games at the 16-team provincial tournament, head coach Brian Bull still gushed about his team’s performance.
“All the kids played well,” Bull said. “It was a super-good experience for the kids to see what teams can do at that age group.”
The Rockets were notably younger than most of the teams in the tournament, with only one 12-year-old on the roster. Other than that, the rest of the Duncan players are all 10 or 11.
“It was a super-young team, new to the level of play,” Bull commented. “All the teams we played ended up in the gold division.”
The Rockets’ opponents in pool play included the eventual gold medal-winning Abbotsford Outlaws and the second-place Langford Lightning, as well as teams from Richmond and Delta, who also advanced to the gold division.
Bull is optimistic about the future of this year’s team, and noted that registration numbers for next season are looking good.
“We have some good ballplayers coming through,” he said.
