Yet another game has slipped away from the Cowichan Cougars in the final minutes.

As evidenced by the fact that their goal differential is the smallest in the Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association’s Over 30 A division, the Cougars have been in contention in nearly every game they’ve played this year. But several of them have been won by the opposition just as time ticked down.

That same story played out last Friday as Cowichan lost 2-1 to Prospect Lake on a windy, rainy night in Victoria.

The Cougars allowed the first goal of the game, but Joeleen Achurch scored a header off a corner kick that just eluded the Prospect Lake goalkeeper.

“I just wanted to get my head on it,” Achurch said. “We had hit the crossbar earlier and needed some luck to go our way.”

The teams traded chances in the second half, with both goalies making saves to preserve the tie. Prospect Lake got a semi-breakaway with about 10 minutes left, and made no mistake as they went up 2-1. Cowichan pushed for the equalizer, but couldn’t put the ball away.

The Cougars and Prospect Lake will meet again in the regular-season finale this coming Sunday at Evans Park, with Cowichan needing a win or a draw to clinch fifth place.
