The Cowichan Valley’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch #53 has distributed almost $10,000 to local charities and other groups from the proceeds of its annual poppy campaign, held last November.
The local Legion’s poppy campaign was one of the most successful across Canada.
“The 2020 poppy campaign was particularly challenging because the COVID-19 pandemic prevented many of the veterans and senior volunteers from setting up at their usual posts with the poppy boxes at the various businesses and events, and the cadets were also stood down,” said Betty James, branch president.
“We’ve done small, modified cenotaph ceremonies, and the community came through with donations. We look forward to a bigger public presence this year.”
