The Shawnigan Basin Society is hosing a gourmet four-course dinner and silent auction to raise funds for the group on Saturday, Oct. 30.
Called Arts & Eats: Forest to Foreshore Fundraiser, the fundraiser runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Cherry Point Estate Winery, with chef and event sponsor Dr. Richard Walton.
“Cooking has, for the past 50 years, been one of my great loves and passions,” Walton said. “Partnering with Cherry Point Estate Winery, has given me not only the opportunity to follow that passion but also to do something good for the community.”
Supper will feature wild salmon, spot prawns, local foraged mushrooms and wine tasting.
The event will also debut paintings by Victoria artist Cehnoa Willow, who has donated a work for the auction. Other auction items include pottery, jewelry, photography and more.
The Shawnigan Basin Society is a non-profit volunteer environmental organization that works to safeguard and restore community watersheds in the south Cowichan area.
“The work of the Shawnigan Basin Society is providing a model for watershed stewardship that needs to be replicated across the Canadian landscape,” says Herb Hammond, a forest ecologist and founder of the Silva Forest Foundation.
The society has a three-year goal to raise $105,000 in core funding.

On Oct. 30 from 5 p.m. to midnight the world’s largest hockey stick at the Cowichan Community Centre in Duncan will be lit up red.

Cowichan Valley runners are invited to participate in the virtual Cinnamon Bun Run.
This Ladysmith event is going online for the second year due to COVID.
It is a five km run/walk and 10 km run presented by the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association (LRCA). Registration is open now until Nov. 24 at this link: https://raceroster.com/events/2021/54288/2021-cinnamon-bun-fun-run-virtual-5k-and-10k
This year, it will be a virtual charity event to promote healthy outdoor family activity before the holiday season. It will also provide some much-needed resources to the LRCA and its many non-profit programs.
Registration is $10 for adults (13 and over) and $5 for children (12 and under). All proceeds benefit the LRCA.
“We, unfortunately, cannot operate a predicted finishing time for participants this year like in years past, but we anticipate runners and walkers will enjoy getting outside with family, engaging in some exercise and enjoying some delicious treats,” said Rick Rake, LRCA manager of communications and events.
All participants will receive a limited-edition Cinnamon Bun Fun Run cookie from the Old Town Bakery in Ladysmith.
Participants can choose their own start time and date for the event but must complete the event virtually before Nov. 28. They can use the traditional run’s route, or choose their own.
A maximum of 600 registrants can participate, and the event sold out quickly in previous years.
Those who finish can find cinnamon bun cookies waiting Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., starting on Nov. 29 at the lower parking lot entrance to the LRCA building (630 2nd Ave.).
